World Environment Day 2025: Turning the tide on plastic pollution

Image
World Environment Day isn’t just a day on the calendar; it is a global green fiesta that brings 150+ countries together every June 5 to cheer for our only home: Earth. Wondering why is World Environment Day celebrated with such energy? Well, it is a day that turns cities into eco-stages, people into planet heroes, and ideas into action. From schoolkids planting trees to cities banning plastic, this monumental day is where we all hit the refresh button for nature. Beyond the buzz of June 5, a happy World Environment Day acts as a launchpad for positive change. Lasting pledges like India’s single-use-plastic ban and Jeju Island’s “Plastic Zero” vision show how one day’s energy can shape policies, products, and personal habits long after the hashtags fade. Together, these efforts set the stage for understanding what World Environment Day is all about. But what’s the story behind this global day, and why is the World Environment Day celebrated on 5th June? Grab your reusable bottle and let...

Environmental informatics and remote sensing: modern trends in studies of environment and multi-dimensional global change

Image
The future trends in studies of environment and multi-dimensional global change are presented. Current environmental problems related to the climatic changes, global temperature rise and anthropogenic pollution of atmosphere, ocean, rivers, lakes, soils and cryosphere are characteristic features of the multi - dimensional global change, which is the main feature of modern time. 2024 was the warmest year on the record (see Figure 1). If the trend shown in Figure 1 continues for the next decade, the multiple climate tipping points may be triggered which will lead to the increase of various hazard probabilities. The recent examples are fires in California devastating flooding in Valencia and heatwaves in Europe.  Currently, the world is heading toward 2°C–3°C of global warming by year 2100. The observed global warming leads to the increased speed of snow melting, the decrease in snow-covered area and snow duration, the increase in snow fragmentation disappearance of glaciers, dec...

Council of Europe steps up on the environmental front

Image
In a landmark move for global environmental protection, the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers has adopted a new Convention on the Protection of the Environment through Criminal Law providing the basis for a more coherent criminal justice response by states to environmental crime, including across borders. Reflecting a collective response to the “triple planetary crisis” of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, the treaty is an international legally binding instrument specifically focused on the criminal dimensions of environmental damage. It provides a robust legal framework for states to combat serious environmental crimes that have at times gone unpunished or under-prosecuted. The new treaty, approved by consensus, is a resounding call to action. It was developed over two years by experts and stakeholders from the 46 member States, alongside contributions from the EU, UN, INTERPOL, and civil society across Europe and beyond. It reinforces the message that...
