The Earth's polar regions are experiencing dramatic changes due to climate change , with sea ice diminishing at alarming rates. 🌡️ This loss of sea ice impacts global climate systems, ocean circulation, and even weather patterns far beyond the poles. Sea ice modeling plays a crucial role in understanding these changes. By using sophisticated computational models, scientists can simulate how sea ice forms, evolves, and melts over time. These models consider factors like temperature, wind patterns, and ocean currents, offering critical insights into future climate scenarios. 🌍❄️ Accurate sea ice models are essential for predicting rising sea levels, ecosystem disruptions, and navigation routes in the Arctic. As we refine these models, they become vital tools in global climate policy and decision-making, helping us to prepare for the consequences of our warming planet. 🌱 Website:  environmentalscientists.org Nomination:  Nominate Now #YoungScientistAward #Science #Innovation #...

Environmental Degradation

Image
The environment is constantly changing but not for the better it is for the worse. Floods , hurricanes, climate change are all indications of the disaster that is approaching us in near future. The indiscriminate deforestation , us pollution the very place we live in, hunting animals for selfish gains and other such reasons are the cause of the loss of millions of lives during any natural disaster. This abrupt and sudden changes in the climate is due to the years of trouble that the earth has gone through and is still going through. However, we see the situation improving as many have started being conscious towards our planet and taking care of it in hopes of a better future. Years and years of pressuring the earth and its environment has led to drastic consequences that are disastrous for human life and health. We have been mining the land for centuries that has led to a shortage of resources as well as harmful gases emitted from below the land causes air pollution that is harmful an...

Large-scale PV has positive environmental effect on desert areas

Image
Researchers from China found that big solar power plants have a positive positive impact on the ecological environment of desert areas. Their testing was conducted at a 1 GW solar park located in China’s northeastern Qinghai province. A research team led by scientists from China’s Xi’an University of Technology has assessed the ecological and environmental effects of large-scale PV development in desert areas. As a case study, they evaluated the on-site (WPS) effect of the Qinghai Gonghe Photovoltaic Park, a massive 1 GW installation located in a typical alpine arid desert in Talatan, in China's northeastern Qinghai province. The WPS was compared to transitional zone (TPS) and off-site (OPS) areas to control the findings. Their analysis was based on the Driving-Pressure-Status-Impact-Response (DPSIR) model, which is recommended by the European Environment Agency (EEA). This framework breaks down environmental issues into five components, as mentioned in its name. Driving forces re...

A Symbiotic Journey: Championing Global Environmental Health

Image
The Milky Way is the most precious daughter; The Earth is the only world with fresh breath. The world is a universal entity that has similar owners for every molecule. These tiny molecules create a vast environment filled with fantasies and miracles. The atmosphere is a precious surrounding that includes a green background and all human-made things: mental, psychological, physical, and genetic well-being depends on both exogenic and endogenic stimuli, which can be identified as health. However, every year, we as humans on Earth celebrate World Environmental Health Day on the 26th of September, since 2011, under a specific theme that matches the year’s most recognized health and environmental problem. The International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) has been the guardian of this day since 2011, highlighting the importance of caring for environmental health. Each year, the IFEH stands for a unique theme. The last time, it was ‘Strengthening Environmental Health Systems f...

Wastewater bacteria can break down plastic for food

Image
Finding could lead to bioengineering solutions to clean up plastic waste Researchers have long observed that a common family of environmental bacteria, Comamonadacae , grow on plastics littered throughout urban rivers and wastewater systems. But what, exactly, these bacteria are doing has remained a mystery. Now, Northwestern -led researchers have discovered how cells of a Comamonas bacterium are breaking down plastic for food. First, they chew the plastic into small pieces, called nanoplastics. Then, they secrete a specialized enzyme that breaks down the plastic even further. Finally, the bacteria use a ring of carbon atoms from the plastic as a food source, the researchers found. “We have systematically shown, for the first time, that a wastewater bacterium can take a starting plastic material, deteriorate it, fragment it, break it down and use it as a source of carbon,” said Northwestern’s Ludm...

Habitat bank lets developers 'offset' climate harm

Image
Moorland in Greater Manchester will become a "habitat bank" that will conserve wildlife and attract new species. Under the scheme , developers will be able to buy biodiversity "units" to offset environmental harm from their projects. Environment Bank, which provides off-site biodiversity units, has announced a collection biodiversity net gain (BNG) habitat banks. Horwich habitat bank landowner and farmer Richard Pendlebury said the funding commitment of a minimum of 30 years would secure a "stable income" for "generations to come". Environment Bank has 25 habitat banks already live, generating more than 4,000 biodiversity units. The 51-hectare Horwich habitat bank, which is split over two parcels of land, covers low-yielding farmland and grassland that will be transformed into a nature restoration site. It is to the south of the West Pennine Moors, parts of which are notified as a site of special scientific interest (SSSI). Environment Bank is...
